Talking about Bill Puffman reminds me of his famous 'message' - that he believed "A person who thought an unaccredited degree was of some value is the same person who thought that penis enlargement pills worked" I've always wondered how he knew this!

I wonder what is the real value in purchasing fake degrees from fake universities? Lots of people do it, so it must have value to some of them. And what if it doesn't work out? Do you have to go and buy another? And if the second operation quits selling degrees from the guy's house, where does that leave one?

At that point, I suspect, the owner of the ersatz credential should just hold on tight and hope no one looks too closely. In fact, a fake degree from a dead diploma mill might even be better than if the mill was still churning. Less likely to get embarrassed by any future goings-on! Pretty neat!

I suppose Huff should have looked at what John Bear said for 25 years. Bear said that anyone who thought all unaccredited schools were mills was ignorant. He was right of course, but he no longer says such things, not in public anyway, which, of course, makes him rather wishy-washy. Perhaps his opinions could use some truth viagra.

Now as to the enlargement pills, I don't have a clue. But Huff does seem to have some knowledge of the subject. Maybe he could ask for a refund. Big Grin

Right, because absolutely nothing has changed in the last 25 years to cause one to form a different opinion about unaccredited schools. Yeah, the DETC, for example, doesn't accredit them through the doctorate now (except for Andrew Jackson, Columbia Southern, the former SCUPS, the former Pacific Western, and others). And the regional associations still won't accredit distance-only schools (except for JIU, Trident, NCU, WGU, and others). And those stalwart unaccredited schools of yore--Walden, Sarasota, CIIS, CCU--or marginal ones--like Southwest--and new ones--like Capella--never could cut it with the accreditors. That darn cartel kept them all out!

Yeah, nothing's changed to cause one to think that, these days, if a school is good enough to become accredited, it can and should do so. No sense in changing one's mind just because of a blizzard of new facts. Better to stick with the same stupid conclusions no matter what!

Only partially correct as there is a whole wide world of education outside the USA! The term 'accredited' rarely appears outside the USA - and as I've already mentioned, world wide there are well over 3,000 private universities -with a number of prominent ones being in the USA.
And, in many parts of the world a stringent requirement for PhD students is that they must publish their research progress as they work towards completion of their Doctorate. With such progress results always having to be peer reviewed by experts in the particular field of study.

Is this what you did? Where were your research articles published prior to earning the Ph.D.?

Absolutely Rich!
If you had 1/2 a brain you would be able to determine exactly where they were published!

I think all this expert-worship is uncalled for. I have proof most markers/supervisors barely skipped through my papers when they read them.
Supervisors and markers are often -in their own words if not in reality- overworked and annoyed, if not lazy and incompetent, and you just represent another kink in their plan to go fishing, or to go addressing that GLBT committee that's in search of a spokesman to enter politics.
Most academics got there not out of that monomanic love of XIX century scholars who lived and dreamt their field, but after the sixfigures and the political claptrap.
And got there by going all-fours under many tables and by cutting many unethical and situational compromises.
The percentage of success I owe to markers and supervisors? ZERO.
How many books did three different supervisors suggest across several dissertation-size papers? Hear, hear...TWO.
Were those supervisors bad?
No, actually the very opposite, go figure.
