Another criminal mastermind foiled when somebody (in another state) did their job and tried to verify the degree. The crook knew there was no chance anybody in Obamaland would bother. She probably figured that if nobody had noticed after 15 years she was home free.

Falsified doctorate earned nursing teacher more than $300,000 in undue wages, authorities say

A former [regionally accredited] City Colleges of Chicago professor falsified a doctoral degree to pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraudulent pay, Cook County prosecutors said Wednesday.

Carol Howley, a nursing professor at Richard J. Daley College, was indicted on charges of theft of government property for allegedly pretending to be enrolled in doctoral classes at [regionally accredited] Rush University when she was hired in 1995. Two years later, she falsely claimed to have earned the doctorate and provided a forged transcript detailing the courses she claimed to have taken, prosecutors said Wednesday.

With pay based in part on educational experience, Howley was overpaid by $307,000, according to the charges.

The theft came to light when a Colorado employer considering whether to hire Howley tried to verify her doctoral degree, according to John A. Gasiorowski, the inspector general for City Colleges.

Rush told Daley College it didn't have any records of Howley ever attending the school, prompting the inspector general's office to investigate. The probe uncovered that Howley lied about graduating with the doctorate in January 1997 and had never enrolled in the school's doctoral program.

"Rush told us, 'We don't even have graduation in January,'" Gasiorowski said.

Gasiorowski said Howley attempted to resign in December 2010, but that the City Colleges' board of trustees fired her in February 2011 based on his office's findings.

Howley, 64, who now lives in Fort Collins, Colo., couldn't be reached for comment. A spokeswoman for State's Attorney Anita Alvarez said the department is working with authorities in Colorado to bring the former professor to Cook County.

At a news conference, Alvarez also announced indictments against two former Chicago Public Schools employees and a former City Colleges official.

Sonia Lopez, 49, who worked as a teaching assistant and treasurer at Marshall Middle School, was charged with theft after she allegedly wrote 14 unauthorized checks to herself for more than $21,000 and took an additional $3,000 from student fees and payments, Alvarez said.

Louis James, 58, a former manager of sports administration for CPS, was accused of stealing $9,000 and using the money to buy sparkling wine, flowers, chocolates, condoms and a king-size mattress at Costco. He was indicted on charges of theft and official misconduct.

Natatia Trotter-Gordon, 43, a former director of business and industry at Kennedy-King College who coordinated a conversational Spanish program for employees at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, was charged with forgery for allegedly stealing more than $51,000. The scheme was uncovered after the hospital notified the school that Trotter-Gordon requested that she personally pick up the payments instead of mailing them to the school, authorities said.

This woman would make a most interesting case study. Based upon my experiential and theoretical background in the behavioral sciences, she is a reflection ...an outgrowth if you will, of contemporary society. "Keeping up with the Jone's"...achieving those levels of "stratification" that remind us how special, talented, bright, and sought after we are. Aaaaah...it does an ego good to see all those letters strung together at the end of a surname, not to mention the financial perks it provides...sadly, the letters don't add up...the woman is exposed as charlatan and her criminal endeavor is exposed! We live in a culture of Narcissism that is unprecedented and fueled by the internet, social media and television, which continues to remind us that we "MUST" not allow our colleagues and countrymen to catch up with us, we need to always be one step ahead, financially and academically...SOCIETY DEMANDS IT!..."our ego won't allow anything else"...so we live a masquerade, that after a number of years we embrace and believe. Not only do we believe it, we feel it is our "RIGHT"...we are entitled to have these additional, unearned perks!...Hell, I'm WORTH it! Despite the fact I didn't earn it. Prison is full of narcissist's and sociopath's...all sociopath's are narcissists, but not every narcissist is a sociopath. I have sadly had my fair share of psychic vampires and malignant narcissist's in my life. At some point I made the existential decision to say enough is enough...no more do I allow these "life-sucking" parasite's the opportunity to invade my space. I let the "authorities" deal with them...as this fraud will be dealt with inevitably. I can only imagine the wake of destruction this woman has left behind her...shocking, positively shocking

I knew a gentleman who practiced nefarious behavior in the community. He blithely claimed he had a bachelor of science in business administration, in order to secure a very prominent job in Westwood, that required a bachelor degree in business, as a prerequisite before hiring...in reality, this turd had about 9 community college units. I challenged his "less than wonderful behavior"...he said that "it was the only way to get ahead...he needed the boost"...my friend Kevin even championed his deception. Needless to say, I parted ways with these two slime-balls... I found out later...P.J. (the gentleman sporting the unearned B.S. in business) was found out and he was subsequently sacked for being a fraud...I think he may have even debuted on quack-watch...LOL!

Quote:SOCIETY DEMANDS IT!

I don't think so...she pocketed 300.000$...quite an ego-booster if you ask me...let's not mix these frauds with the hypothetical vane mister Jefferson who owns several laundries but alas has no degree and thus decides to buy one honorary degree...vanity is one thing, theft is another...this woman is a thief, not just a little vane.

You missed the point I was trying to illustrate Ham...Her dilemma goes beyond a "little vanity"...we're not talking about vanity degrees...we're talking about a lifestyle of fraud and chicanery, that is rooted in a personality disorder. This woman wasn't acquiring "vanity" degrees...she was LYING about her academic credentials and committing fraud! Her ego-centrism is quite evident based on her shamelessness and obvious "sense of entitlement". Many people have some "less than wonderful personality traits"...it's quite another to have a "full blown" personality disorder". This woman was claiming a doctorate degree. (which she didn't possess) and basically robbing the school that employed her. That is sociopathy my friend. Based on her past presentaion, this woman in all probability has antisocial personality disorder...which means she is a narcissist as well. Adlerian thought deals with levels of stratification...and how "anxiety" in our society is often a direct result of people feeling "inferior" because their neighbor possesses more "toys", has a higher paying job and more education. Narcissists's will cut corners and lie and steal and commit fraud to keep up the Jones's...case in point with Ms. Howley..

When working for the state my colleague claimed a woman had brought her diploma in, just before she started work. In fact on her first day, HR made her bring in a copy of the diploma with the raised seal. This woman claimed she graduated from USC...not to shabby a school to graduate from...anyways, months after she was on board, someone in HR took a close look at the diploma and found a misspelled word and a screwy graduation date, in something like February... she was called into HR to render an account for these irregularities, and she broke down in tears, she confessed...she ordered the fake diploma on-line and used it to secure a job with the state of California...she was summarily $hitcanned... some peoples kids...

I don't think they are nutcases, either. But for 300.000$ I'll dress up as playboy bunny if someone is willing to put that much cash onto the table. They are just swindlers pulling a fast one.
