does anyone else here think gollin looks like the type of guy you would catch trying to look at your package in a public restroom?

I suspect his limitations force him to confine his activities to the sit-down facilities.

1 Liberia underwent a couple extra 'revolutions' since the start of the affair, so that might be why some millists went out of business: new thugs in town who happened not to be on their payroll.
2 big brother let it shamefully slip it through the net: who's the dope who would truly bet 10 cents on 'accreditation' from certain countries? So to vindicate the error they framed the millists.
3 well, if some day i run a shady business selling degrees from Uganda and making tax-free millions, then someone might as well try to frame me...it happens all the time.
4 there are used car salespeople on both sides of the accreditation line: University of Phoenix is one.
5 i have no clue why those stupid millists didn't run their business from Belize or didn't expatriate...

Why didn't they fully incorporate in Liberia with a local board and ship the diplomas from Liberia? They could have simply functioned as overpaid consultants.

there is no excuse for stupidity, especially since:
1 some anonymous Belize IBC costs how much, $300/500 a year?
2 when you try Bonnie&Clyde tricks to harvest tax-free millions, you'd better be prepared...these millists played it like middle school morons.

I don't think the 'consultant' gig would have worked, but at least being 'only a representative' might cut extra room to flee the country.
Face it, you need to be bigger than some shady millist to afford fooling big brother from the white fence house next door.
They could have/or be expatriate and now bargain with big brother at a safe distance, although US big brother is known to kick-in doors and fraudulently abduct US expatriate citizens with domestic issues.
They could have relinquished US passport & be living like kings with a latin american passport...

The part I don't get is that the operation was amateurish from day one and the prosecutors and the courts paint it like it was some great sophisticated organized crime ring. All the sophisticated operations in the world are still operating. They did not take even simple steps to ensure their safety. I guess they believed that since they weren't defrauding anyone, just providing goods as ordered, they weren't committing a federal crime. The fact that they were right didn't stop a determined prosecutor from ignoring the law and going for the conviction.

That's why the feds had what they considered a difficult time prosecuting, because there weren't any crimes being committed.

In the past cases the "fraud" was the representation that the degrees being sold were "accredited." Even that is a stretch, because the representation wasn't "regionally accredited" but just a plain vanilla "accredited." In SRU's case the degrees really were accredited, at least at first, until our own government queered the deal.

Virtually every aspect of this prosecution was bogus, from the government's theft of records to the judge sitting on an RA board of trustees. Considering we are celebrating Independence Day in this country, this is a harsh reminder that we still have a long way to go.

Quote:But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security....A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

How could the judge not see that he has a serious conflict? That one really bothers me. Who appoints federal judges? Who gets rid of them?

Did he keep the case because he thought he could really screw the competition but good?

Let's see:

(1) Nobody complained or could be convinced to complain until heavy handed federal agents forced them to.

(2) Seizures were made contrary to the terms of the warrant and policy.

(3) The US government applied pressure on Liberia to remove legitimate Liberian accreditation to help the government case.

(4) False accusations of bribery of foreign officials were made for what were legal facilitation payments or expenses. The parties receiving the payments apparently don't deny receiving them, they just deny the characterization as a bribe. Tell me that Uncle Sam himself is not slipping a few bills here or there in foreign countries. It's the way the world works. Did your water accidently get shut off at 5:00 o'clock Friday evening? Do you want it back on sometime before next Wednesday? Did you forget to give a nice gratuity to the police officer when he dropped by at Christmas for a visit? I'm sure if you call the police they'll show up just after lunch the next day.
