A while back there was debate concerning Nepalese distance education. Since it appeared the Maoists were very likely to dominate the new regime in Katmandu I thought it appropriate to ask them. My link was in fact through a British ex-Gurkha major who has contributed articles to the UK Guardian about the Maoists. He said he was sorry but couldn’t help because he is in Afghanistan at the moment. I then found an email address to approach the Maoists directly.

Things being in state of flux, distance education is not top of their agenda right now. They asked the source of my enquiry. I said the “degree discussion” forum. “Ah”, they said, ‘Degree discussion’ has similar problems to us in Nepal.”

“How so?” said I intrigued.

“In Nepal,” they explained, “we have a king of whom we wish to be rid. On Degree discussion you have a spiteful pathologically vindictive old rouged queen with faded charms that believes she is the center of the universe. We are told she is the reincarnation of the concubine Cixi of the Yehonala clan, who rose to be the Dowager Empress of China. However we understand she uses the name UNCLE JANKO.”

Yes, that is indeed her name, “said I, “and the chief court eunuch GUS SAINZ is too frightened to challenge her. I think you will have better luck in Nepal getting a republic than we on Degree Discussion will have getting rid of our malicious old queen.
