  Is College Worth the Investment?
Posted by: Winston Smith - 10-16-2010, 11:25 AM - Forum: General Education Discussions - Replies (45)

Here's an interesting study that compares return on investment for various categories of colleges.  Unfortunately it did not consider for-profit schools like U of Phoenix or Kaplan, or any of the new wave of non-traditional DL schools.  Not surprisingly, the return on investment is higher for the more selective schools.  But there are wide variations of return within each category.

Quote:Is College Worth the Investment?
by Mark Schneider
American Enterprise Institute
October 12, 2010

For decades, a college education was the second most-expensive commodity families ever paid for, after their house—and given rising tuition and falling house values, college may now be the most expensive purchase. Knowing how that investment is going to pay off is a critical consideration that should factor into the decision about which school to attend. Going forward, we need to find ways to make these detailed return on investment data available for more schools and help students make worthwhile investments of their time and money.

.pdf   09-EduO-Oct-2010-g.pdf (Size: 166.41 KB / Downloads: 4)

Quote:Key points in this Outlook:
• The return on investment (ROI) from a college degree is higher at more selective universities and at public universities.
• Within each level of selectivity, ROI varies widely among individual colleges.
• With many colleges simply not worth the investment, we need to find ways to collect and publish ROI data so students can make better decisions about what college or university to attend.

Quote:One way to judge whether the ROI is worthwhile is to figure out how much it costs students to borrow money to attend a college and compare those costs to the rate of return. Currently, unsubsidized student loans from the federal government carry a 6.8 percent interest rate. This rate is a natural starting point to compare student ROIs; if the rate of return is lower than the cost of the borrowed money, attending that college does not seem like a prudent choice.

Of the schools for which PayScale reported data, seventeen colleges (listed in table 1) fail this basic test. While about half of the colleges are in the two lowest levels of selectivity, an equal number are in the middle, and one is in the “very competitive” category. Twelve are private, not-for-profit institutions, while only five are public institutions, which reflects the higher cost of attending a private institution.

While this analysis sets an absolute threshold keyed to a well-known and published interest rate, other loans that students may take out have higher rates. These private loans have variable interest rates that can reach 9 or 10 percent. Obviously, as we move the cutoff from the 6.8 percent federal-student-loan rate used in the above example to the higher costs for a mix of federal and private loans, the number of schools whose ROIs fail to surpass the cost of money grows quickly. ...

  Dutch Love Gollin Too
Posted by: Martin Eisenstadt - 10-13-2010, 02:27 AM - Forum: George Gollin - Replies (13)

Hard to tell what to make of this article on the Dutch website MijnPersbericht.com.  Appears to be a rehash of allegations from the Dolphin lawsuit, but with a few extras, perhaps gaining something in the translation (or perhaps not).

As far as we know, there are not (yet) any criminal charges pending against Gollin for his role in the Liberian shakedown operation described in the Dolphin lawsuit, nor is Gollin currently out on bail.  Likewise, he has not (yet) been formally suspended by his employer for his activities, although he is or was on a paid "sabbatical" leave.

But perhaps the Dutch sources have better information than we do.  Clearly Gollin is garnering the same endearment overseas as he has earned domestically.  First in the original Dutch language version, then the Google translated version.

Quote:Amerikaanse professor verkoopt valse diploma-erkenningen.
augustus 30th, 2010 | Author: Onafh. Persgroep

Quote:American professor sells fake diploma awards.
August 30th, 2010 | Author: Ind.. Press group

George Gollin, professor of physics at the University of Illinois UIUC in the United States and board member of the American Council of Higher Education Accreditation Chea, by the prosecutor in California, accused of fraud and racketeering after he had tried to fake education approvals to sell start private schools and universities.

According to the 58 pages of documents submitted by Director Jerroll Dolphin from the Saint Luke School attempted Professor Gollin between 2005 and 2008 he repeatedly called a recognition to sell for $ 6000 per month, according Gollin from various Ministries of Education in corrupt African nations like Nigeria, Liberia and Congo. He promised the school that their enrollment would increase significantly after purchase, and that the amount would soon recover.

The same scenario repeated itself over a dozen other institutions. As more and more schools suspicious and refused the bribe to be paid, put Gollin them under heavy pressure through a series of letters to local newspapers to broadcast on letterhead of Chea, who argued that the schools worthless and illegal diplomas would deliver as they are not by themselves were recognized.

A number of newspapers printed the letters off Chea, including names of teachers and directors who refused to pay the bribe. By the non-pecuniary damage and loss of revenue resulting from the negative publicity the Prosecutor seeks a record amount of $ 120,000 for George Gollin for the targeted victims.

Gollin itself must await trial in freedom after paying a deposit in the court of Los Angeles. The University of Illinois Professor of the cheating one year suspended, Gollin something self-contradictory and explains his blog as an "unpaid sabbatical year" in which he writes a book. Chea has so far refused to comment on the future of Professor Gollin, which in the United States, the perception has arisen that have more schools and universities recognize this organization only charges have purchased.

The wife of George Gollin, Melanie Loots, an American consumer has meanwhile been charged with selling of deceased animals to meat processors. The wife is also active as a spokeswoman for Chea.

An entire forum about Chip White???
Posted by: Mountain Man Mark - 10-10-2010, 02:58 PM - Forum: Chip White - Replies (52)

Hello everyone:

I am new here, a friend of mine just turned me on to this site.  I am a 53 year old straight former administrator of Survivor Island.org, which is a website that was founded in June of this year by myself, 3 other administrators, and your Chip White.  One of our original administrators was run-off pretty quickly, and Chip and his young sidekick Blair Wilson, tried running me off almost right away after I finished a re-write of Empty Closets.com's siteuser rules for SI.  (Empty Closets.com specializes in trying to convince sexually-confused teens and young adults that they are gay, and is also partially owned by Chip White and MRC).  I lost my admin position at Survivor Island the first week of August, voted off by the 3 gay guys that still run the site.  The focus of Survivor Island was originally supposed to be providing peer and adult mentor support for sexually-abused teenage boys and young adult men.  Many of our original younger members had joined us after a crisis on Male Survivor.org, where a gay moderator had been caught trying to pick-up several of the teenage members under his supervision there back in April.  I was used by Chip, Blair, and the other admin, Ken, to bring to SI several teenagers who trusted me from MS, where I had been an adult site mentor for 2 years.  Once our site was up and running, I was no longer needed.  We had our last big shootout over Labor Day weekend, at which time I was permanently banned from SI by Chip and his sidekick Blair.  In June Chip flew to Atlanta to meet with a 17 year old from MS that he had first met on EC, then flew to Toronto, Ontario, Canada for Blair's graduation, so Blair and Chip know each other really well.  Now the 17 year old, who has a long history of childhood sexual victimization, wants desperately to be Chip's next big adult film star.

Our last big shootout was over whether or not there is such a symptom of childhood sexual abuse as same-sex attraction disorder.  In my own recovery I was successfully treated for SSAD, and have lived the last 13 years of my life as totally straight, half of that time happily married, largely free from my own history of childhood sexual victimization.  There have been dozens of recent high-level academic studies by PH.D-level researchers at respected universities confirming SSAD as a symptom of childhood sexual abuse and the validity of treating such a symptom.  However, Chip White has found an outspoken gay therapist (Joe Kort, out of Royal Oak, MI), to support his contention that any history of SSAD makes someone 100% gay.  Chip has been feeding his confused young guys this theory on EC as well as on SI now since June.  It was Labor Day weekend that I also discovered Chip's gay adult website, MRC, which specializes in "twink" porn, or gay porn involving young adults aged 18 to 25.  Once I discovered his website, it all started making sense to me.  Chip has been abusing his position and misrepresenting himself as an allegedly experienced therapist with a degree allegedly from Oberlin College in Ohio, on both Empty Closets as well as Survivor Island.org, to get to know and befriend sexually confused and now abused teenagers seeking help, convince them that they are gay using flawed and misquoted research, to the total exclusion of the majority of academic research on the subject, and once these young men turn age 18, Chip tries to bring his new friends into his adult porn world.

At the very least what Chip is doing constitutes a serious breach of professional ethics as well as a serious conflict of interest.  Does he even have a degree or is that made-up too?  He has been portraying himself on Survivor Island as an experienced therapist.  Since my discovery I told Chip flat out that if any of the young men who trusted me that I brought to SI from MS EVER ended up being adult porn stars for MRC that I would turn him in to California Mental Health authorities.  What he has been doing with young childhood sexual abuse survivors should be considered very abusive and possibly illegal.  These young guys came to Male Survivor seeking help for their issues, not hoping to become twink gay film stars.  Right after Labor Day weekend I wanted so badly to turn Chip in, but I didn't have enough information about him to do so.  If he doesn't even have a degree, and with the information that I have found here, we have more than enough to hang him once and for all.  He should have absolutely no business trying to counsel teenage sexual abuse survivors using false academic credentials.

Chip has a profile on Linked-In as well as on some Sacramento gay dating site.  I have the URL's to both as well as the URL to MRC Entertainment.  It would please me greatly to share my info with all of you here, in the hope that his ongoing abuse of these kids can be stopped.

Narcissism and Posting
For the past 12 years or so, I've been posting on quite a few DL-related fora. After pondering it for awhile, I realize that my primary aims in doing so have been two:

a. Showing off what I know.
b. Proving you're wrong.

Oh, sure, there's been no small amount of desire to truly help people as well, but I'm afraid (truly) that reason doesn't crack the top two. Thus....

I've concluded that my behavior has been incredibly narcissistic and selfish. Regardless of the low esteem in which I hold a few posters, I've found a way to get even lower. Thus....

I'm going to refrain from posting for all the right reasons. I'll still read the boards, and will be happy to respond to the few PMs requesting assistance. If I have some salient and extremely essential information another poster requires--certainly a long shot, at best--I'll PM it. I would like to reserve the opportunity to post if I'm convinced it will help the community, but I suspect that will not happen. And I won't be posting this on the other board--most readers there also read here, I suspect. But it really doesn't matter. So....

See you around. I may have something to announce next year. Peace....

Quote:In USC vs. USC, Supreme Court action favors West Coast
A 13-year trademark battle ends as the high court lets stand a ruling that the 'SC' logo belongs to the University of Southern California, not the University of South Carolina.

By David G. Savage, Tribune Washington Bureau
October 4, 2010|7:43 a.m.

WASHINGTON — The University of Southern California shut out the University of South Carolina in the Supreme Court on Monday as the justices let stand a trademark ruling holding that the interlocking letters "SC" are the registered mark of the sports teams based in Los Angeles.

The high court turned down an appeal from USC in Columbia, S.C., which since 1997 has sought to register its own "SC" logo for the sale of sports merchandise.

USC in Los Angeles objected, and a special Trademark Trial and Appeal Board considered the evidence. It concluded that although "real fans" would not be fooled, casual fans might be confused as to whether the sportswear came from the West Coast or the East Coast school.

The federal trademark law forbids the use of identifying marks that are "likely to cause confusion" among consumers.

Lawyers from South Carolina disputed the board's conclusion, but a federal circuit court upheld it in January, and the Supreme Court said it would not hear an appeal in USC vs. USC. The case was among hundreds that were denied a review by the high court on its opening day.

"We are pleased the Supreme Court did the right thing and ended this after 13 years," said Michael Adler, a Los Angeles lawyer for USC. "We'd rather beat them on the football field than fight them in litigation, but if they won this, they could have used this [logo] on any merchandise."

The sale of sports merchandise with collegiate logos is a $3-billion-per-year business, according to estimates provided to the court. Sometimes, there can be confusion when letters such as "UM" or "OU" are used, because they could refer to one of several universities.

In its appeal, South Carolina's lawyers said its "SC" logo had two stylized, curved letters that interlocked. This is in contrast to the blocked letters used by the Los Angeles school. They urged the high court to take up the case to make clear that common marks such as letters could not be trademarked by one seller.

But lawyers for the Los Angeles school argued that its use of "SC" was a nationally known trademark that had been used for selling merchandise for decades. During that era, the university in South Carolina had used "Carolina" or "USC" to advertise its apparel.

"We have always been 'SC,' " Adler said, "and we were there first."

  Why am I a Libertarian?
Posted by: Virtual Bison - 10-05-2010, 03:19 AM - Forum: General Education Discussions - Replies (5)

Of course I support academic freedom. Especially when it comes to non-traditional colleges and universities. But it goes way beyond this.

The Government of the United States, the land where I reside is extremely repressive towards anyone who opposes conformity. The issue of academic freedom is only the tip of the iceberg. If you investigage the restrictions of freedom, beginning with Freedom of expression, sexual abuse hysteria, the stupid and counterproductive drug laws, the expansion of the prison-industrial complex and so on and so forth than you will know what I am talking about.

I personally refuse to call myself a Republican or a Democrat. They are both two sides of the same coin. I think that Neo-Cons and Neo-Liberals are all working towards the same goal and that is control of individual freedom.

  RA Dean's Student Servants
Posted by: Don Dresden - 10-05-2010, 01:22 AM - Forum: Unaccredited vs. State-Approved vs. Accredited - Replies (10)

It wasn't enough just to embezzle a million bucks. This RA St. John's University dean and vice president had her scholarship recipients working 20 hours a week--chauffering her son to the airport at 3 am, delivering cash to her at a casino, cooking, taking out her garbage and shoveling snow.

She must have gotten the Gold Standard confused with the Golden Arches standard, and was preparing her students for their future careers at McDonalds.

Quote:Ex-Dean Accused of Using Students as Servants

By C. J. HUGHES
Published: September 30, 2010

A former administrator at St. John's University accused of embezzling about $1 million from the college in Queens has now been charged with far more lurid crimes: forcing students to clean, cook and act as her personal servants to keep their scholarships.

Cecilia Chang had previously been charged with stealing from St. John's.

The ex-administrator, Cecilia Chang, who served as a dean and vice president at the university, was charged with forced labor and bribery, according to a complaint made public by federal prosecutors on Thursday.

As the dean of the Institute of Asian Studies at St. John's, Ms. Chang had the authority to grant 15 scholarships a year. The recipients, most of whom were from overseas, were told they had to work 20 hours a week under her supervision.

The students thought they would be doing work related to the university. Instead, according to the prosecutors, she forced them to perform menial tasks at her home in Jamaica Estates, Queens.

One of the students had to drive Ms. Chang's son to the airport at 3 a.m., the complaint says, and another had to deliver cash to her at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

And she made it clear that if the students did not perform their extracurricular duties, they would lose their scholarships, which were worth at least $5,000, the complaint says. The loss of the scholarships might have forced some of the students to drop out, it adds.

"In addition to the outrageous way she treated her students, in exchange for scholarships, she had them falsify documents," Charles Kleinberg, an assistant United States attorney, said at Ms. Chang's bail hearing in Federal District Court in Brooklyn.

Ms. Chang, 57, did not enter a plea or speak during the one-hour hearing, but she stood shaking her head as prosecutors argued that she was a flight risk because she holds a passport from Taiwan, which does not have an extradition treaty with the United States.

Her lawyers argued that by surrendering on Thursday morning, Ms. Chang demonstrated that she would not flee. They added that she was already wearing an electronic monitoring device as part of the bail conditions in the embezzlement case, a 205-count indictment filed by the Queens district attorney's office in September.

In that case, Ms. Chang is accused of stealing about $1 million from St. John's. Prosecutors say she used the money to pay for lingerie, casino trips and her son's tuition.

After three decades at St. John's, Ms. Chang was suspended when the embezzlement allegations came to light in January, and she was fired in June.

Magistrate Judge Joan M. Azrack set Ms. Chang's bail at $1.5 million, to be secured by two homes belonging to friends, one in Hempstead, N.Y., and another in Yonkers. If convicted, Ms. Chang faces at least 10 years in prison, prosecutors said.

After the arraignment, Ron Rubenstein, one of Ms. Chang's lawyers, said that the students' duties, which never totaled more than 20 hours a week, were a normal part of the St. John's work-study program.

Many of those tasks were to help with Taiwanese dignitaries visiting Ms. Chang's house, where she frequently entertained out-of-town guests for fund-raising purposes, Mr. Rubenstein said.

"The fact that this is even a crime is shocking," he said outside court. "Cooking a meal doesn"t sound at first blush like work-study, but wait till the trial. I'm not going to give you the defense now."

According to the complaint, one student, identified only as CI1, "drove Chang to the hair salon, to restaurants and to the airport."

"As a driver" it adds, "CI1 was also responsible for taking out the garbage and shoveling snow at Chang"s residence."

St. John's officials said that the students who worked under Ms. Chang did not have to worry about losing their scholarships.

"If these allegations by federal authorities are true," Dominic Scianna, a spokesman for St. John's, said in a statement, "Ms. Chang's treatment of some students and the environment she created are shocking and in complete violation of all this university stands for.""

A for-sale sign was posted outside Ms. Chang's house on Thursday; an Internet listing puts the price at $2.89 million, or for rent at $5,800 a month.

Now Wikipedia says that its accredited and if there were anything phony about it I am sure that Tall Magic and his gang would be all over it.
