Central Michigan University Agrees to Pay $450G in Sex Suit
Posted by: Little Arminius - 04-02-2009, 10:28 PM - Forum: General Education Discussions - Replies (11)

This was posted at DD. It appears to be fairly straightforward. The coach was an employee of the university in a managerial/supervisory capacity and was responsible for providing instruction, coaching and leadership to the female student-athletes. He was entrusted to protect the welfare of the student-athletes and not engage in any type of sexual relationship with his charges.

Associated Press

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. —  Central Michigan University has agreed to pay $450,200 after two women's soccer players accused their coach of inappropriate sexual activity.

The deal signed Monday by Central Michigan is split evenly between the women and includes $150,000 for their lawyer.

The lawyer, Jennifer Salvatore, says the women had sexual relationships with Tony DiTucci. She says they were victims of his "manipulation and seduction."

DiTucci departed in October after allegations of sexual harassment.

In a statement released through his lawyer, he says he's innocent and accuses the women of making "suggestive romantic advances."

One woman was a senior and the other was a freshman. Central Michigan says it was best to settle the matter before a lawsuit was filed.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,511785,00.html

Is today's culture that far gone where there is even a question about whether 1) the coach's actions were wrong and 2) the university, as the employer, was responsible for having oversight over their employee?

Introducing... me

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, since I created this new forum, I figured I might as well post something even though a lot of the regulars here probably know me.

I am a serial entrepreneur, having started, run, and/or sold something like a dozen or more businesses over the past 30 years. I've worked in a bunch of different fields all over the map, from holistic health to computer sales to the music business to adult media to real estate to management consulting to film and broadcast media and more -- and I still have my fingers on the pulse of several businesses I am part-owner of, but my biggest passion is probably holistic healing, psychology and counseling, with music and film being a close second.

I attended Oberlin College (but didn't graduate -- I got distracted by work opportunities.) I've done coursework at a number of other schools as well, and have been interested in distance learning since the mid 1990s, when I first saw an ad for John Bear's book in the classified section at the back of a magazine.

As far as distance learning, I've always been interested in (and alternately amused and disgusted by) the antics of degree mills, and providing a resource to check out validity of various schools (or, as Rich Douglas says, businesses masquerading as schools) is, I think, one of the most valuable and unique aspects of DegreeInfo.

I am delighted to be a participant in this community, and I hope to be a little more active in coming months than I have been.

Holistic health?  Is that what the coffee enema quacks are calling themselves these days? I think he meant "ass-holistic."

And just sneak "adult media" in there between music and real estate and hope nobody will notice?  There's nothing adult about the interests of the boy rapists Chip is peddling his filth to.

What happened to the claim of being Oberlin "alumni"?  Fact is he's a clown with no credibility in distance learning or any other aspect of higher education.  He's obviously looking for more pervs like himself or to get over on naive morons who don't know a predatory pervert when they see one.

The Real and the Fake: Degree and Diploma Mills
by Alan Contreras and George Gollin

Quote:The recent release of a list of over 9,000 people who bought degrees from St. Regis “University” has helped bring into focus a problem that legitimate institutions like to ignore: An enormous number of people who could be getting real college credentials are buying degree- and diploma-mill ones instead. This causes damage that goes beyond the obvious one of unfair competition. Such degrees introduce counterfeit currency into the market and call into question the value of the genuine thing.

Degree Mills in the United States
Let’s begin our discussion of this problem with a detour into terminology. What are the differences between degree mills, diploma mills, and legitimate colleges?
The terms “diploma mill” and “degree mill” are often used interchangeably, but in fact most experts consider them to have different meanings:

• A degree mill provides a “real” degree from a fake college.
• A diploma mill provides a fake degree from a real college.

In other words, there are two snakes in the pit. In the first half of this article, I will focus on degree mills and their near neighbors, legally operating but unaccredited colleges; George Gollin will discuss international diploma mills in the next section.

What makes a degree valid
Under U.S. law, there are only three sources for the authority to issue college degrees: Congress, a sovereign Indian tribe, or a state government. Accreditation is voluntary, while approval from one of these sources is mandatory. (Note: Federal law requires that for its students to be eligible for federal financial aid, a school must have both state approval and accreditation; one cannot subsume the other. And state approval comes first. Because it is a mandatory prerequisite for accreditation, accreditors are required by federal law to obtain proof that colleges have state approval when they apply for accreditation, including renewals.)

Alan Contreras has served as the administrator of the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization (ODA), a unit of the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, since 1999. Prior to coming to ODA, he worked for the University of Oregon, the Oregon Community College Association, and the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education. He is a noted author of bird books, and his essays on education topics appear frequently in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Education. George Gollin is a professor of physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research in experimental elementary particle physics focuses on the nature and origins of the equations that govern space, time, matter, and energy. His faculty service work concentrates primarily on problems in higher education quality assurance and accreditation. He was elected to the board of directors of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation in 2006.

  Warnborough Legit, Clones Whine
Posted by: Don Dresden - 03-26-2009, 06:48 PM - Forum: Unaccredited vs. State-Approved vs. Accredited - Replies (12)

Panties are in severe twist mode at DD.  One of their long time favorite whipping boys, Warnborough College, has earned legit status in the UK.  And for good measure, WC announced it at DD with everything but an "in your face": WARNBOROUGH: Accreditation Update

This is the operation of Brenden Tempest-Mogg that has hopscotched across states, countries and continents for decades seeking a friendly forum to conduct legit business.  Looks like he finally found a winning formula, although not quite at the original level or configuration.

For many years T-M offered university degrees through Warnborough University.  The current configuration is called Warnborough College, a change in nomenclature of significance in the UK.  Only a university may offer a degree there, while a college may offer courses, diplomas and certificates, but no degrees.

As such Warnborough College is what the British term a "further education institution" as opposed to a "higher education institution."  Sort of kinda almost pret' near like an American junior college or city college, except no associate degrees.  Your diploma at a "further education institution" can get you into a "higher education institution" where you can finish your final year and earn a degree.  (Remember basic British bachelors degrees are 3-year, not 4-year like American.  You then may "top up" your plain vanilla bachelors degree with a fourth year, and thus earn an honours degree (e.g., BA Hons).)

ASIC is "an embryo accrediting body" according to the ASIC accreditation handbook.  Presumably this means it just started (i.e., embryonic) and not one that accredits embryos.  More here:

Quote:Following widespread and increasing concern over the behaviour of some colleges in the private sector, which largely cater for international students, the Government recently identified the need for a more rigorous system for accrediting colleges involved in recruiting international students. Accordingly, a proposal for the mandatory accreditation of education providers, wishing to bring international students into the UK, was included in the Government’s Command Paper “A Points Based System: Making Migration Work for Britain”.

In response to this proposal, the Quality Study Abroad Network (QISAN) together with a number of professional practitioners with considerable experience in recruiting international students for universities, further education colleges and schools/EFL colleges and in establishing collaborative arrangements between overseas institutions and UK partners, decided to establish an embryo accrediting body, namely the Accreditation Service for International Colleges (ASIC).
http://www.asic.org.uk/Documents/ASIC%20Handbook.pdf

Quote:ASIC is a new organisation offering accreditation to UK colleges.
http://ukinslovenia.fco.gov.uk/resources...stitutions

However, important point, ASIC is a legit (government recognized, approved, certified kosher) UK accreditation agency, and it indeed has accredited Warnborough.

So blow it out, Gus, Bear, Contreras, and the rest of you swarming naysayers.  And thumbs up to the Brits for promoting accessible, legit education rather than protecting the wealthy education cartel by limiting competition.

Wink Lady sets Chip straight at DI
Posted by: Little Arminius - 03-25-2009, 02:16 AM - Forum: Chip White - Replies (3)

No, it's not what you think. Instead Dave Lady, who has a DBA from NCU, straightened out Chip concerning some IT issues that Chip didn't understand. Chip, who knows very little about programming but felt that he should comment anyway, started boasting about his programming experiences 30 years ago but added the disclaimer that he's not a programmer. Dave Lady, who has both the credentials and the real-world experience, corrected Chip and was polite enough to say that he would discuss the matter further in another thread when he had more time. Chip realized that he was in way over his head, thanked Dave Lady and said that he looked foward to the discussion in a separate thread.

  Vinny123 being mocked at DD

Vinny123 just realized that the gang at DD have been laughing at him for quite a while, and he isn't taking the revelation very well. He sounds like he's going to have an online meltdown. Big Grin

BTW, this forum commented on vinny123's continued inability to use proper formatting for quotes about 6 months ago Lev finally said something about it. We also commented on his habit of creating fictional dialogue between other posters and himself in order for him to appear witty and clever, which, of course, he is not.

Question Was Quinn actually banned?
Posted by: Little Arminius - 03-23-2009, 04:24 AM - Forum: Nominees, second-stringers, others - Replies (6)

While I felt uncomfortable reading Quinn's posts about some fairly recent health problems, I don't see where he said anything that warrants him being outright banned from DL Truth. Everyone here can hold their own in any online brawl, that's for sure; I don't think that QTJ was hurting anyone's feelings in the latest exchange. Would the Administrator reconsider the action taken against Quinn or was there more to the issue than what was posted on the board?

  Granny Was A Union Goon
Posted by: Herbert Spencer - 03-22-2009, 08:03 PM - Forum: John Bear - Replies (13)

Ever wonder where Klempner got the notion that stalking and threatening innocent people was "delightful"? Here's Klempner bragging about his grandmother's shameful participation in the ILGWU extortion ring:

Quote:My grandmother's high school started at 8 pm. It was called "night school." She could have slept in, but for some wacky reason, she chose instead to sew neckties in a sweat shop from 7 am to 7 pm every day.

(Later she was an organizer for the ILGWU. Does anyone else remember their charming TV spots from the 70s and 80s.
I think Woody Guthrie may have written the song.
http://www.degreediscussion.com/forums/v...102#p52048

The word "sabotage" comes from the practice by striking French railway workers of cutting the "sabot," the metal retaining shoe that held railroad tracks in place.

The extortionate arsenal of union strikers also includes murder, arson, assault, battery, vandalism and every other imaginable crime against person and property.

Quote:According to the National Institute for Labor Relations Research (NILRR), more than 10,000 incidents of union violence have been reported in America's newspapers, and on television and radio, since 1975.

But media-reported union violence constitutes only the tip of the iceberg. Samplings of police and company records collected by NILRR and other scholars indicate that 80-90% of violent union incidents are never reported in the media.

When combined, reported and unreported incidents of union vandalism, assault and battery, arson, and even murder may number over 100,000!
http://www.nrtwc.org/fuva109.pdf

Well, considering that his pappy was a black-listed communist, maybe union goon doesn't seem so bad in comparison.

Also, contrary to Klempner's typically false speculation that the "Look for the Union Label" song was written by Woody Guthrie, in fact it is credited to Paula Green (lyrics) and Malcolm Dodds (music).

But it actually is a rip off of a song written by Jerome Kern, "Look for the Silver Lining." Kern also wrote "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Ol' Black Magic,"? among many others. Since the poor guy died in 1945 the union probably figured that just saved them the trouble of breaking his thumbs or murdering him when they stole his song.

  Caribbean diploma mills?
Posted by: Little Arminius - 03-21-2009, 10:06 PM - Forum: Unaccredited vs. State-Approved vs. Accredited - Replies (3)

Some of the DI crowd are showed their true colors in a discussion of the legitimacy of Caribbean-based schools. Bill Huffman suggested following the guidance of the ODA which effectively rules out all but non-RA schools. Steve Foerster responded with a mild-to-fair critique of the ODA (and by inference Alan Contreras) concerning a bias against schools in the Caribbean. BOOM!!!

You would have thought that Foerster attacked Contreras personally, judging by moderator Kizmet's response. Kizmet, noted for being ill-informed on all matters related to DL, responded in a shrill manner by creating a fictional dialogue between Steve Foerster and herself. She must have thought that this is a clever device to use; after all, John Bear and vinny123 use it on occasion with varying degrees of effectiveness. Unfortunately when Kizmet attempts it, the results are embarrassing.
